Incubators with music sources
Music therapy for the little patients in their Neonatal Icu
Health & Wellness
The initiative, launched a few months ago in the HUNSC Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, aims to provide premature babies or babies born with a complication, greater stability and balance for their development by applying Mozart music.
Following a strict protocol, the little ones receive for two hours a day a music therapy session applied individually in each of the nests of the participating babies.
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the Hospital Universitario Ntra. Sra. De Candelaria (HUNSC) in Tenerife, attached to the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, has launched music therapy sessions for babies who are hospitalized in the center .
Although the application of music therapy is not new in hospital centers in Spain, the latest scientific studies gather evidence that Mozart’s work is especially positive in many fields, including the neonatal, as it not only relaxes babies and reduces their stress hospital, but also minimizes pain, improves breathing, heart rate and helps in their diet and therefore, to gain weight, essential in these small patients.
For Dr. Paloma González, coordinator of the implementation of this initiative in the Neonatal Icu of the Ntra. Sra. De Candelaria University Hospital, “it is a positive experience that favors newborns to develop in a relaxed and safe environment as that provided by the womb.
This therapy will also be enhanced by the kangaroo method, which also participates in these benefits and which is carried out in our unit ”.
-Who does it apply to?
From the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the Ntra. Sra. De Candelaria University Hospital, a complete protocol has been established to offer music therapy to hospitalized babies.
Thus, babies who are candidates to receive this alternative therapy must meet a series of medical requirements such as not exceeding 1,500 grams of weight and / or 32 weeks, which are still in an incubator, hemodynamically stable, predisposed to a good food tolerance and not suffer at the time of starting music therapy, complications related to a premature birth.
This therapy, to be applied, requires prior informed consent from the parents.
-Music therapy sessions in incubator
Once a day, for two hours, the nurses from the HUNSC Neonatal Intensive Care Unit insert small loudspeakers into the incubators, placed 30 centimeters from the neonatal pinna.
These devices are responsible for the emission of sound at a volume that does not exceed 65 decibels inside these nests.
The selection chosen to offer music therapy includes pieces by Mozart, one of the great figures of musical classicism.
Each incubator has an independent music source, connected to its own computer system with which the vital signs of the newborns are controlled, so that the music session can be started automatically from the nursing control.
During the hours in which it is carried out, the acoustic signals are eliminated so that all external stimuli from the surrounding environment can be reduced and thus not interfere with the music therapy session, so that a quiet environment is also fostered in the unit.
